How Much Do Replacement Patio Doors Cost?

Renewal by Andersen gliding patio doorWhether you are shopping for a single gliding door, or a pair of French doors, patio doors come in a wide price range. The price ultimately depends on each door’s size, quality, and features. We’ll try to break it down for you so you can have an idea of how much you would be investing in a replacement patio door for your home and which option is the best for you.

Gliding or Sliding Patio Doors

Vinyl or aluminum gliding patio doors will be the least expensive options available. For a basic sliding patio door, including installation and hardware costs, you would probably invest anywhere from $1200 to $2500 from a big box store like Lowe’s or Home Depot. This option is best for a small starter home with a lower price point, or it can also be a quick fix for homeowners who need to sell their home right away and aren’t looking to invest a lot of money into upgrades.

Some things to keep in mind with the less expensive gliding patio door options are the lower quality look and feel, the expansion and contraction from the summer heat, and the tendency to stop working properly after a few years. We have seen countless vinyl or aluminum patio doors sticking in their track instead of opening and closing smoothly, causing much frustration for the homeowners. From an efficiency and hygienic standpoint, the rails in vinyl doors also tend to get pretty dusty and dirty and are hard to keep clean.

Renewal by Andersen French patio doorIf you are looking for a more permanent solution because you plan to be in your home for many years and are looking for a beautiful side or back point of entry, I definitely would recommend a gliding patio door such as a Jeld-Wen, Pella, or Andersen. These doors have much better insulation properties, look gorgeous, and will operate smoothly not just for a couple years, but for as long as you are going to be in the house. The quality does come at a higher price point, though: for these sliding patio doors, you can invest anywhere from $2500 to $5000.

French Patio Doors

French patio doors are generally a bit more expensive than gliding patio doors. These hinged patio doors have a more traditional, classic look, as opposed to the sleek contemporary appearance of the sliding doors. The least expensive French patio door options are going to start between $1500 and $2000 at a big box store, and once again, I would recommend using these for a starter home or a house you’re getting ready to sell. The higher quality doors that will continue to be beautiful and function properly for many years will generally cost around $4500 to $6500. These include brands like Jeld-Wen, Pella, Andersen, and a few other higher-end manufacturers, and they are designed to be a permanent solution for homeowners who love their home and want to enjoy it for many years.

Where to get a nice, wood front door

Anyone know where to get a nice wood exterior door? I am looking for a wood front door. I don't want anything that looks like a castle door, but nothing like the junk at home depot either. I see some houses here in LA with simple wood doors, or some with carving in them. I am looking for a door that is simple, with character. No large glass parts, mostly solid wood.
Any ideas would be appreciated!
