Exterior Door Styles, French, Sliding, Patio, Options

There are few things in our world that we can’t just walk in and buy off the shelf. Doors are one of those things. There are endless combinations of material, glass types and exterior doors styles. Before you consider the door, consider the interior space:

  • Do you have room for a door to swing into the room?
  • Do you prefer it to swing to the outside?
  • Do you want it to possibly slide?

Exterior doors styles you might consider for your door replacement are:

Single Doors are available to open to the left or right and swing in or out of the home. You want to have your door Double Bore so as to allow for a handle and a bolt lock.

Double Doors are two doors combined as one unit. Available both as French or Patio doors.

are a traditional type double door. These doors open from the center of the two doors. They usually have glass and typically have one side of the door that opens while the other stays stationary unless unhinged to open as well.

Patio Doors look like French doors but have a stationary strip in the center of the two doors called a mull strip. This “center mulled” door is popular as it provides more security from the doors being kicked in. The downside to the “center mull” is that you can’t open the entire space for furniture moving.

Center Hinge Doors are used where you have the wall space for a French or Patio door but only want one side to open. The center hinge door will provide the look of a French door but hinge in the center allowing the opening to be on the right or left side rather than the center.

are a combination of 3 or 4 doors usually made up of operable and stationary doors. The doors can be arranged to be center hinge or open like a French or Patio door.

Sliding Doors are great if you don’t have room for a door to swing in or out a sliding door is a perfect option. A sliding door won’t take up any floor space. Sliding doors offer the most glass space of any glass door, offering the best view of the exterior. Upgraded locking options (multi-point locks) are available to make them extremely secure. Many manufacturers of sliding doors now offer an option of the French door look on sliders. A sliding screen is standard on most sliding doors and an upgrade is available to a retractable screen.

Door Options

Once you’ve selected the door type that you want, there many details you can consider to enhance the look of your new exterior door or entry door.

Pocket Door info needed please?

Hi! DH and I are tossing around the idea of replacing our old worn out sliding glass patio door with a pocket door. It would be on an exterior wall leading out the back of the house and in a relatively small kitchen. My questions are:
1. Can pocket doors be used as exterior entrance doors
2. How difficult is it to install a pocket door? The current opening we would be using houses a 5 ft. sliding glass door.
Thanks for any and all help!

I have a side door to my home that always get snow drifts, you get wet when it rains, and the wind blows so strong you can hardly get the door open. What do you call the structure that is built around the door?
