Remodel question(s)

I'm a first time condo owner. The place was built in 1973, updated a little, still has parquet (sp?) and mirrored aluminum closet doors, etc.
My question is: where do I start?! I'd prefer to improve over a period of time, trying not to get too much in debt. I bought the place for $150k in 2002, appraised at $230k now, so I don't think it would be worth it to put $50k into it. Right?
I've put in new windows ($6k) and want to put in hardwoods, California Closet type closet, new appliances, counters, doors and trim, the list goes on and on..
Also, when the floors are installed, what happens with the appliances? And hot water heater (presently in said closet on top of carpet)
